When to Mail Christmas Cards: Your 2026 Holiday Mailing Timeline

When to mail Christmas cards in 2026 — the official USPS holiday deadlines plus a work-backwards timeline so your cards (and envelopes) are ready on time.

Every December there's a moment — usually around the 20th — when someone realizes their Christmas cards are still sitting in a drawer, unsigned, unsealed, unmailed.

Don't be that person this year. Here's the whole timeline, worked backwards from Christmas, so your cards actually arrive on time.

The short answer

Mail your Christmas cards by December 15. That gives you a comfortable cushion ahead of the USPS recommended deadline for First-Class Mail (December 17 in the lower 48), and it absorbs the holiday slowdown that hits every sorting facility in mid-December.

Work backwards from the mailbox

By December 1: envelopes done. This is the step everyone underestimates. If you're printing your own, your address list needs to be collected, formatted, and printed before the holiday rush — not the night before you mail. (If you haven't started, read How to Print Christmas Card Envelopes at Home first — it's the whole process, minus the mail merge headaches.)

December 1–11: sign, stuff, seal. Ten days is plenty for an evening or two of card-writing — as long as the envelopes are already printed.

December 12–15: drop them in the mail. This is your cushion window. The cards are done, the mail is moving, and you're not competing with the December 20 panic crowd.

December 17: the official USPS deadline for First-Class Mail in the contiguous U.S. Hitting the actual deadline works — but one snowstorm or one busy week and you're cutting it close. The 12–15 window is the plan; the 17th is the backstop.

The official 2026 USPS holiday deadlines

Christmas cards travel as First-Class Mail. Here are USPS's recommended send-by dates for 2026, per their September announcement:

Contiguous U.S. (lower 48):

  • USPS Ground Advantage: December 17
  • First-Class Mail: December 17 ← your cards
  • Priority Mail: December 18
  • Priority Mail Express: December 19

Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories:

  • USPS Ground Advantage: allow 10 days or more; check USPS delivery estimates for your origin and destination ZIP Codes.
  • First-Class Mail: December 17
  • Priority Mail: December 18
  • Priority Mail Express: December 19

Mailing to someone deployed (APO/FPO/DPO):

  • First-Class Mail (your cards): December 9 — a full week earlier than the domestic deadline, so work this whole timeline a week earlier for these cards.
  • Priority Mail: December 9; Priority Mail Express Military (where available): December 16

A word about what "deadline" means: these are the dates USPS recommends for arrival by Christmas — they're guidance, not a guarantee. Mailing a few days earlier is always safer, which is exactly why the December 12–15 window above exists.

What trips people up

  • The address list. Collecting 80 addresses from texts, group chats, and Christmas cards from 2022 takes longer than writing the cards. Start the list now — send one link and let guests fill in their own addresses.
  • The envelope step. Addressing 80 envelopes by hand is a weekend project. Printing them is an evening. Budget accordingly.
  • Postage math. A standard Christmas card in a standard envelope needs one First-Class stamp. Square envelopes, heavy cardstock, or extras tucked inside (photos, letter) can push it to nonmachinable or additional-ounce postage — weigh one finished card at the post office before you buy 80 stamps.

Don't let the envelopes be the bottleneck

The timeline only works if the envelopes are ready by December 1 — and that's the part Sealed With Style handles. Send your guests one private link, they fill in their own addresses, and you download print-ready envelope PDFs in 20 styles.
